When not catching lobsters by hand some fishermen use a lobster trap. The trap is typically made of a wooden frame surrounded by a rope or metal mesh. A piece of bait, usually fish, is placed inside the trap. The entrance to the trap is designed so that it doesn't allow the lobster to escape once inside the trap.

Lobster season is from the month of September through April. The animals spawn from May through August and this gives them a chance to multiply.

There are also regulations on size and how they are caught. For home consumption the shell of the Spiny Lobster must be at least 3.25 inches in length and the Slipper Lobster must be at least 2.75 inches in length. Restrictions include no spearing or taking any lobster with eggs. Lobsters must be taken whole and cannot be taken mutilated.
