An opihi or limpet is a sea animal with a hard protective shell that is found on rocky shores of the Hawaiian islands. They eat the algae on the rocks found in the the splash zone and therefore it can be a very dangerous fishing method. Opihi pickers may be seriously injured and in some cases die from getting hit by a wave and slammed against the rocks or swept into the ocean and drown.

Opihi pickers will familiarize themselves with the tides of the area they will harvest and use a simple butter knife to remove the limpets. Fishing regulations limit the taking size to a shell size no less than 1.25 inches and the meat size no less than .5 inches. Opihi is considered a common sea snail, but on the shores of Oahu they are becoming less and less common to a point of extinction. However, they are occassionally found on the offshore islands in the bay.
