Whipping is a sport used with rod and a reel and is also referred to as flyfishing or casting. Fisherman used this method from the shoreline or a boat. The lure or bait is cast into the water and retrieved again and again until the fish bites. It is a method that is a test of skill, strategy and technique. Some of the types of fish caught with this method are hinalea (wrasse), papio (young giant trevally), moi (threadfin), 'o'io (bonefish) and lai (leatherskin jack). U'u (menpachi) and 'aweoweo (bigeye) can be caught during the night. Rods and reels will vary with the type and size of fish that one is trying to catch and the bait used on the line varies with each fisherman. Some use live bait such as eel, shrimp, 'oama (young goatfish) otherwise plastic strips or curly tails can be used.
