'Aweoweo
or 'Aheahea or Goosefoot
Chenopodium Oahuenes
Aweoweo is primarily a coastal shrub but the woody stems occasionally
give the appearance of a small tree. Ancient Hawiians ate the leaves
and plant tips when food was scarce. They were wrapped in ti leaves
and cooked on hot coals and eaten like spinach. The leaves were
also pounded, crushed and applied ike rubbing alcohol to tend minor
wounds. The bark was used to make shark hooks.
