'Ilima

The I’lima is an indigenous low sprawling shrub. It has small heart shaped leaves and can grow up to 4 feet. The 'Ilima shrub have flowers that range from yellow, dull red, to a rich orange and on occasions brown. The petals of the 'Ilima are about an inch across and resemble a hibiscus with its five petals and stamens in the center. The flowers scatter in groups of 2’s or 3’s all over the short stems of the I’lima shrub.

 
Ilima can be seen growing at sea level and on up to the altitude of 2,000 feet.
  The I’lima is a very popular flower used for lei making. Medically, the 'Ilima flowers were used to cure general weaknesses and as a mild laxative for children. The bark of the roots were mixed with water and other plants and drunk as a tonic.
