Naupaka
Kahakai Scaevola
Sericea
This indigenous plant
is found along shorelines. It is also a hearty plant with light
green leaves and flowers. The
blossoms look like they are only half of a flower and seeds are
mostly white and sometimes whitish yellow.
There
are two kinds of naupaka, one that grows in the mountains and the other
near the sea.
The
naupaka plant has a deep root system which help stabolize erosion
and provide a safe nesting place for seabirds. The
Shear Wedged Tailed seabirds that
nest on Mokunui will often dig their burrows beneath the naupaka plant.
