The Ancient Hawaiian people used this plant medicinally.

The Pa'u o Hi'iaka is very easy cultivated.
The name literally means "sarong of Hi'iaka" which tells of a time when Goddess Pele had gone on a long fishing trip and returned to find the vine had covered her baby sister Hi'iaka and protected her from the sun.
