Christmas
Shearwater
Chocolate brown in color this bird grows to about 14 inches. It has
a short rounded tail and their bills are black and they have dark
brown legs and feet. Theey fly with stiff wings with a span from 28-32
inches. They have live up towards 10-11 years.
The Christmas
Shearwater feeds where there are predatory fish like the skipjack
tuna who drive newly hatched fish to the surface. This includes
the mackerel scad, flying squid, goat fish, and squirel fish. Using
a sense of smell they capture their prey by diving into the water
and chasing it.
The
Christmas Shearwater makes a high pitched screeching that sounds like
a cat.
The Christmas Shearwater
seeks land only to breed. They come to the offshshore island of
Mokumanu starting in February. They lay one white egg on the bare
sand sheltered by grass or other vegetation.
