Sooty Tern
This black and white bird has fingered wings that allows it to dig in the ground. Its underside is white with black beak and a black stripe running through its eye. Its feet and upperpart are black too.The SootyTern has webbed feet like a duck.
 

 
 

The Sooty Tern skims along the ocean top to look for food and rarely touches down on the water. They primarily eat flying fish. They also feed offshore where predatory fish drive smaller fish to the surface.

The Sooty Tern has nests in large numbers on the offshore island Mokumanu. No nests are prepared and a single speckled egg is laid on the ground. They hatch in about 30 days and both parents take shifts about every 5 days.
