Mokunui
Signs & Trailbuilding
Windward students together with the Department of Land and Natural
Resources worked on the offshore island of Mokunui to clear trails
and replace signage. The trails are to encourage "visitors"
who paddle out to the island to keep to the path especially during
the nesting season. |
|
|
| Visitors
to the offshore island Mokulua often unknowingly step on the burrows of
nesting seabirds. |
| |
| |
Using
rakes and shovels the path was leveled for walking and smoothed
of large rocks and weeds. Next students spaced themselves
at arms width to form a linge brigade to bring up several
buckets of sand to mark the trail. |

|
|
Offshore
islands remain the last undisturbed nesting areas for seabirds. |
|
|
|
Meanwhile
other students walked along the trail to identify signs that had corroded
and in need of replacement. The students are looking forward to return
for trail maintenance and additional planting next year. |
