Mano or Blacktip Reef Shark

Description • The Blacktip Reef Shark has black tips on its dorsal (back) and pectoral(side) fins. The Black Tip Reef Shark has a darker back and pale belly which is actually a camouflage when viewed from above and below. It has a skeleton made of flexible cartilage and must swim constantly with their mouths open to take oxygen from the water that flows through their gills. They are the smaller of the sharks and grow to a maximum of 6 feet in length and can weigh up to 100 pounds.

Habitat • The Blacktip Reef Shark was once abundant on the Hawaiian reefs. They are less frequently seen today.

Diet • The Black Tip Reef Shark eats other reef fish. They also eat octopus and crustaceans.
