The male Damselfish create and guard nests of tiny eggs until they hatch.

Description • There are many species in the family of damselfish in Hawaii and they characterize a coral reef. This particular species however is endemic and grows up to 5 inches in length. The adults are silver to pale brown with white below mid dorsal. The juvenile is black with white coloration.

Habitat • Hawaiian Islands reefs in depths from 3 to 150 feet. Adults are found above coral reefs at deeper depths while juveniles found in sheltered areas of the reef. They are common near antler and large cauliflower corals. They can be territorial.

Diet •. They feed on zoo plankton, benthic invertebrates and algae.
