The cement secretion of the barnacle is so strong and durable it was once proposed for use in dental work.

Goose Barnacles

Description • The Goose Barnacle is white or grey it is often light blue, black, and brown. It is roughly the shape of a heart and can have a stalk up to 3-4 inches in length.

Habitat • Goose Barnacles cement themselves to flotsam and jetsam, which are debris or objects floating in the water, and wash up on windward shores. Mostly found on items that have become loosened from the seabed and washed up on shore. This species is also commonly found on the bottom of wooden ships.

Diet • Goose barnacles sweep the water with featherlike jointed appendages to gather drifting food particles.

 

Alhtough the goose barnacle may resembe the necks of geese it was the medieval idea that they appear similar to baby geese that hatch from somewhat egg like shells .
