Description The Hawaiian Monk Seal may have gotten its name from its solitary or "monk" like existence. Adults have a brownish coat while the juvenilles are more silvery gray with a creamy white belly, chest and throat. They weigh from 300 to 400 pounds and can reach to a length of 7 feet at maturity. Females will come ashore to give birth and nurse their pups. Seal pups are born in the spring and have a completely black coat. They nurse for 5 to 6 weeks during which their mothers do not feed and subsist entirely on energy stored in their blubber. Habitat Hawaiin Monk Seals live on land and water, and are found only in the Hawaiian Islands. They are a rare and endangered species. Diet Common food for the Monk Seal is spiny lobster, eels, octopus, and reef fish. They may prey on open ocean fish but that is only because they might travel long distances in the open ocean for many days. Monk seals however also come ashore to sleep and digest their food.
