Description • The Parrotfish family is true to its name with a variety of bright, large colored scales and the beak like formation of its teeth. The juvenilles are very differently colored from the adults as are the males and females. Parrotfish don't really have a true stomach but a very long intestine. A blue streak starts from the tip of the lip to under the eye. Dorsal fins are marked with green. Teeth are white and covered by the lips. Parrotfish are recognized for there parrot-like beak, rounded head and large colored scales. Parrotfish got their name by their bright colored scales and their parrot-like beak. Uhu were favorites of early Hawaiians and there are many legends about them.

Habitat • Parrotfish lives in shallow water among the reef. They are active by day and at night, and seek shelter among rocks.

Diet • Parrotfish eat seaweed on rock or dead coral surfaces. They also use their parrot-like beak to eat algae off rocks. They will also graze on seaweed on dead coral or rocks.
