The long spines of this urchin were used as chalk on slate boards and so were also referred to as the Slate Pencil Urchin.


Heterocentrotus mammillatus

Description • The Red Pencil urchin is large, blunt, pencil-thick spined urchin; often bright red. At night the spines sometimes turn chalky pink! The urchin can grow to 8 inches.

Habitat • Found in holes on the reef in shallow waters.

Diet •. The Red Pencil Urchin feeds on algae.
