Sailing vessels found in Kailua Bay are usually catamaran type sailboats. Many are parked near the shoreline fronting the beach front residences along Kailua Bay. The Hobie Cat is a popular personal catamaran because it can be launched from the beach and is an affordalbe water craft. The Hobie Cat is about 12-14 feet in length and the mast is almost 20 feet high. They are very light and can reach speeds near 30-40 knots.


When sailing, sit on the upwind side of the boat with the wind on your back. Balance your weight as the boat beings to tip. Tuck one foot under the hiking strap for balance. Use one hand to hold and control the mainsheet and the other hand to steer.

If the boat tips over, stay with the boat. It will not sink and it is easy to flip over the right way. You can also land the rig on the beach which is easy to do. Always go sailing with a life vest on and be sure to observe all safety precautions.
