Surfing is a water sport that is known world wide and is the act of being propelled across the water by the force of the water while standin on a board. The sport was originally developed by ancient Hawaiians and today has spread across the world wherever waves break that can provide a decent ride.

Beginners should look for the lightest, widest and thickest board because they are more bouyant and will catch very small waves. Many surfers today also use a rash guard or wetsuit for cold conditions. Upgrading to the next surfboard will depend on the type of surfing style you develop.

Surfers know who to read a weave to determine a swell windwo. As the wave approaches surfers turn and face the shore and begin to paddle as fast as possible to attain the speed of the wave. If the speed is timed correctly the wave will propell the board forward and the surfter will balance and guide the board with weight distribution.

Kailua Bay shorebreak is a perfect place for beginners. There is a sandy bottom and shallow break. Experienced surfers paddle out to the occassional break near Popi'a or Flat Island and further out to the Mokulua Islands. There are several surfshops in Kailua that where you can rent or purchase a surfboard and accessories.
