Sandcastle building is a common activity on the shores of Kailua Beach. The sand must be wet to act like cement on dry sand. If the sand is too wet because if you do landslides may occur while building your castle. The fine sand of Kailua beach is great for sculpture too---the University of Hawaii's School of Architecture holds their annual Sand Castle Event. Student teams compete to build a sand sculpture some of which are life size!

How to Build a Sandcastle
1. Gather wet sand.
2. Mix the wet with dry sand to desired consistency.
3. Mold the sand.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 as needed to construct a castle.
5. Add detail such as coral, seaweed, driftwood, etc.
