Beach Closure
Occasional heavy rains bring polluted runoff which causes the Dept. of Health to post health warning signs that the beaches are closed. The steep Ka'iwa Ridge encloses the Lanikai neighborhood and drains into several open pipes that empty directly into Lanikai bay.

Erosion
Erosion has long been an issue for beach front home ovnwers. Attempts to reduce erosion by putting up seawalls in some cases created further erosion to neighboring properties. During periods of heavy surf some home owners have had to resort to using sandbags to preserve their property.

Parking
Lanikai is a residential neighborhood and so a majority of the beachgoers drive to the area to enjoy the beach. Parkinng is limited and parking might not be available near a beach right of way. The additional cars and traffic are also of concern to many residents.
