Ka'elepulu Stream and the coastal area near Kailua Bay was listed as an impaired water body in 2002 under the Clean Water Act 303(d) by the Department of Health. Comprehensive studies of bacterial indicators show that they regularly exceed the standards of enterococci and clostridium perfringens which is associated with human an d animal waste. Kailua Bay standards are also exceeded when Ka'elepulu Stream is opened to the Bay.
