| Contaminant Sources Primary contaminant sources of Kailua Bay are trash, debris, nutrients, oil and grease, and other pollutants that are carried by surface water runoff. Contaminants from human recreaational use include include waste from boaters (trash, human waste), fishermen (lost or abandoned nets), bathers (trash, human waste), and dog owners (dog waste). Elevated concentrations of indicator bacteria flow from the Oneawa Canal and Ka'elepulu Stream especially during storm conditions. The Mokapu Outfall from the Aikai Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility discharges treated sewage to the ocean at the north end of Kailua Bay | |
